registry must haves...electronics

baby monitor!  i think this is a must have.  i stare at the screen watching her sleep while i try to sleep myself.  but aside from night times, i can carry the monitor around with me to watch and hear her.  we have the "levana" brand and it has been a good choice for us and not too expensive either, it retails for $100 at buy buy baby.

mamaroo.  i don't think this is totally necessary, but it was a hand me down that was gifted to us and we still use it at 4 months old!  it provides a nice place to put the baby down and hopefully they like the movement of it.  when bowie was a newborn she would nap in it, now i put her down in it for brief periods of time so i can get quick things done around the kitchen or living room.

swing.  i have heard that some baby's don't like the back and forth movement of the mamaroo, so they prefer a swing.  hard to believe they can be so opinionated at such a young age.  luckily bowie didn't have a preference, but we got her a fisher price travel swing.  we keep it in the office, and it doesn't take up as much space as some of the other swings.  i bought this swing used for really cheap, but they can retail from about $50-$65

humidifier.  i have yet to use this, but i remember using one as a kid, so i registered for one.  i registered for the homedics cool mist humidifier from buy buy baby for $60

no touch digital thermometer.  i love the one we got, it is pricey, but i think worth it.  you just hold it up to the baby's forehead and push the button.  it is made by braun and retails for $60 at buy buy baby

white noise machine.  i purchased this at around 2 months old when bowie started to sleep in her crib.  she liked her mobile, but unfortunately the one she has is not motorized (big mistake!)  mobiles are already super pricey (running about $50-$60 + dollars), and i think they lose interest in them quickly, so i found a projector with a sound machine that plays white noise.  this is amazing!  it comes with 3 projection slides that appear on the ceiling and plays a few different white noises (heart beat, waves, rain) and has a timer on it as well.  i think this holds her interest longer and the noise helps her sleep as well.  it is also a much smaller investment than a mobile.  the brand i have is from target and is called "my baby" and retails for $25

paint party!

paint and wine night is a very popular event to do with your girlfriends, and i have been wanting to do one for a while now.  they seem to sell out quickly and often times the painting is not one i am interested in.  my girlfriend is very talented in all crafty things.  she took up painting a while ago and offered to host a paint party with 4 of us, the timing was perfect because my mom got to join.  she picked an alice in wonderland themed painting and lead us step by step.  here is the finished product of what my mom and i painted.  i am excited to hang it in bowie's nursery.

4 month check up!

bowie had her 4 month check up and the doctor was very happy with the way she is growing and "thriving!"  the doctor said we can start to think about introducing a rice or oatmeal cereal and solid foods and was pleased with her eating and sleeping schedule.  she took her 4 month shots like a champ!  she is growing so fast, too quickly for this mama!

weight = 15 lb 1 oz (77%)
height = 26.25 in (97%)
head = 16 in

my mom sent me my measurements at the same age and i was pretty close...i was at 95% for height and 70% in weight!

last weekend we had planned on going to whistler, but the weather wasn't so good.  so we decided to stay at home and enjoy being outside and seeing some new sights.  we had lunch at an italian spot we had been wanting to try.  after a good lunch jarad got to ride some dirt jumps and then from there we made a few stops to some local attractions.

crock pot teriyaki pork tenderloin...

i have mastered making the perfect pork tenderloin roast, it is a favorite go to meal of mine for company.  but i wanted to see what else i could do with a pork tenderloin, so i tried a teriyaki recipe in the slow cooker and it came out really well.

2 pork tenderloin roasts (approx 2 pounds)
1 T olive oil
1/2 cup honey
3 T soy sauce
1 T worcestershire sauce
1 lime (zest and juice)
1/2 t red pepper flakes
4 cloves garlic minced
2 T minced ginger
pepper to taste

how to:

in a pan brown your pork roasts with olive oil until golden on all sides.  then in a bowl mix all other ingredients to make a marinade/sauce.  put pork and marinade in slow cooker and cook on low for 5-6 hours or until the pork shreds easily.  allow the shredded pork to soak in all the juices from the marinade.  serve as tacos with fresh avocado or as a teriyaki "bowl" with rice and veggies.

farmers market finds!

our farmers market started about a month ago, and we have gone a couple of times.  it is a small one and they tend to have a lot of berries and flowers, but i did find a few goodies!  i got some local honey, which is good for allergies to get you acclimated with your local pollens.  i also got some jalapeno infused olive oil.  and my brother in law was inspired to make an awesome pasta dish when he found the pasta guy who has dried pasta infused with all kinds of herbs, veggies and spices.  we got the garlic and chive pasta but he also has unusual flavors like peach chipotle!  and speaking of peaches, my favorite farmers market find is the jam lady who has an amazing bourbon peach jam.  it is so good you could eat it straight from the jar.  but i have been putting a spoonful in my greek yogurt and this morning i had it in a crepe!  so good.  it would also be great over some vanilla ice cream.  i will have to get more of this next weekend when my parents are in town!

one of the most frequently asked questions to us as new parents is "how does bowie sleep?" a newborn sleep was was non-existent.  i remember i would jump at any opportunity to take a nap while she slept or if someone would watch her, i would try to sleep.  the moment i closed my eyes i was fast asleep and then i would get woken up when she needed to feed, but it felt like i had been asleep for 5 minutes.  luckily, those days don't last forever and somehow your body gets accustomed to little sleep and you learn to function.  and some nights are better than others.

at 5-6 weeks i started pumping milk so that i could feed bowie by bottle at night time.  she is an inefficient eater when it comes to breast feeding and this allowed us to get a solid 4 hours of sleep in one stretch!  this felt amazing!  then when she woke up around 2am i would breast feed her again and she would hopefully go back to sleep until early morning.

we were feeling very fortunate with this little amount of sleep, by 12 weeks we invested in the merlin magic sleep suit and it is awesome!  bowie was getting too big to be swaddled and breaking out of it.  this sleep suit helps with the moro reflex, the startle reflex that wakes up babies.  and it feels cozy like a swaddle blanket to her.  she looks like a baby sumo wrestler in it, but this was a game changer and we started to get 6 hours at a time!  i would feed her at around 3am and she would go right back to bed.  i have since recommended it to some of my mommy friends and they too have had great success with it.

once we had the night time routine down a bit, i realized that it is time to start to get bowie on a napping schedule.  we have been so busy with visitors that it has been hard to get any consistency with her sleeping.  bowie typically will take a short late morning nap and only nap in the afternoon if we are out for a stroller walk or in the car.  and up until this week she has refused to nap in the crib in the daytime.  so i have been doing a lot of reading and started to implement some tips and tricks i have come across and to my surprise this week we are taking a great nap in the crib!!!  so far it varies in length from 1.5-3 hours.  this is giving me a great break in the day to clean the house, blog, do laundry, work out and have some "me time."

i've also been concerned that we have been putting bowie to bed too late.  about a month ago her bed time routine would start around 9:30pm and she would end up in the crib by about 10ish.  over the last month we have been listening to her cues and she is getting sleepy earlier and earlier.  lately she is ready to start thinking about bed by about 8pm.  bed time for us consists of daddy reading a book while i feed her a bottle.  and wilfred LOVES being a part of this night time ritual.  he usually lays on the bed right by jarad and licks his face, sometimes even lays on the book.  i'm surprised that bowie has change on her own.  she is at an age now that if we listen to her cues, she will tell us what she needs.

some of the tricks i use for bed time are...

~nursery has to be very dark
~we use a baby sleep machine that plays white noise or lullabies and also projects images on ceiling (i think it is better than mobile)
~merlin magic sleep suit for bed time and naps
~put her to sleep when she is drowsy not asleep, so she can learn to self soothe
~try to not let her fall asleep with pacifier in mouth, when she does she will cry every time it falls out
~we have switched from the avent soothie pacifier to the dr. browns brand.  it is shaped differently so it will stay in her mouth easier
~have a fan running on low to circulate air and keep it cool
~bed time ritual is the same every night.  she gets a diaper change, in sleep suit, lays in my lap with bottle while jarad reads to her
~if she is on the verge of falling asleep you can relax her by stroking the bridge of her nose or brushing her forehead
~if she wakes up early during a nap, i try giving her the pacifier to see if she will fall back asleep, and most of the time she does

you know you are a new mom when your jewelry now comes in the form of silicone teething necklaces and you wouldn't want it any other way!  bowie is awfully drooly these days, not sure if this is the early start of teething, but either way she is getting distracted while breast feeding and grabbing my hair and shirt, so i thought i would give her a new toy to play with.  we are both loving this "olivia" teething necklace by "mama & little"!!!

bowie can easilly grasp onto the small silicone beads and put them in her mouth while teething or when i hold her, it is made out of non-toxic, food grade silicone and is bacteria resistant and can be washed with soap and water or even in the dishwasher!
