gardening...

it was a beautiful sun shinny day in washington today and that gave me a good opportunity to plant some bulbs.  according to the package i am still in the right time frame to plant them and it says after your last frost of the season, and i don't think we will be expecting anymore snow or super super cold temps.

as i have said before i don't have a green thumb, but i have an interest in gardening, so i will cross my fingers and hope for the best.  i am most excited for the freesias, and i have always loved the colorful ones that my parents have.  our daffodils are in and they make me happy!

here is what i planted and we are expecting rain this weekend, so mother nature will do the watering for me...

getting desperate...

bow started out as such a good eater, excited to try everything and didn't turn her nose up to much!  lately she has become a self proclaimed vegetarian and would rather not each much meat.  good thing is she loves all dairy, so i know she is getting some good protein.  but she will fall in love with a food for a few days and then get tired of it.  and she is getting more independent and wanting to feed herself.

my mom suggested the baby quiches, and i spent too much time walking up and down the frozen aisle at costco and couldn't find them.  so i decided to make my own, and they were super easy.

i took a mini muffin tin and sprayed it with cooking spray.  then i put a couple a big pinch of shredded cooked potatoes.  in a mixing cup i cracked two eggs and about 2 T worth of shredded cheese.  i mixed it together and poured it into each muffin.  baked them at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes and i have little egg muffins.  she is still unsure of them, but they will keep in the fridge for a few days or you can freeze them.  just warm them up and serve.  i am hoping she falls in love with them because what a great way to get protein and veggies in and they are a perfect size for her.

baby's first time at the beach...

sometimes i forget that she hasn't grown up at the beach.   she will be more familiar with life at the lake, but she enjoyed the water on her toes, the seagulls and the sand.

change of heart...

jarad worked hard to lay the thin set and concrete board so he could lay the tile.  he set it on the floor in 2 different patterns so i could see how i liked it.  as much as we both love the tile, i knew deep down it did not fit in with the style of our home and clashed with the oak floors.  i made a trip to home depot to look at other options, but pinterest to the rescue, i came up with a totally different idea!

our house is a farm house and traditional in style.  we are very non-traditional people and i struggle to bring our style into the home while keeping the integrity of the house.  but as i have mentioned before the entry way to our home sort of sets the tone, so i want it to feel authentic to us and make a bold statement.  so...i am going with a moroccan tile.  i think it will complement the oak floor, bring some much needed character and will represent our taste.  i am going tile shopping later in the week, but have a good idea of what i want.  it will be more expensive compared to our distressed wood tile, but it is a small entry way and this will make a big punch.

break in the rain...

this week has been a cold and wet one.  we all (including the dog) are excited for dry and warmer temps.  but we had a break in the rain and daddy put on the hiking back pack and loaded up the babe and we went for a walk in our front yard, and eventually ended up at the neighbors house to visit with the goats, chickens and dogs.

apple galette

tonight is pizza night at our friends house, and i usually bring a salad and wine.  but today i was feeling inspired in the kitchen and decided to make a dessert as well.  recently there were some nice organic pie crusts on sale at the market and i bought a pack not knowing what i was going to do with them.  so i put one of them to use this morning and froze the other.

here is how i made my rustic apple galette, and i am embarrassed to say it couldn't be any easier.

ingredients:

1 pre-made pie crust
4 medium apples (peeled and sliced into thin pieces)
4 t corn starch
2 t cinnamon or apple pie spice
1/4 cup sugar
2 T butter
3 T jam (i used raspberry, because that is what i had, but normally i would use apricot)

how to:

on a cookie sheet let your pie crust come to room temp.  this takes about 25 minutes, so this is a good time to prep your apples.

then in a bowl i mixed all of the dry ingredients.  you could either put your apples in the bowl and mix them until covered.  but i chose to fan out my apples on the pie crust and sprinkle the mixture on top (make sure to leave an edge, so you can fold the crust over).  i actually had a lot of leftover mixture, so maybe you can reduce the measurements.  i took the butter and broke into tiny pieces on top of apples. fold crust edge over and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes or until pie crust is golden and apples are tender.

then i take my 3 T of jam and mix with about 2 teaspoons of water and brush over the top.  this makes the apples shiny and glazed.

let cool and serve!  this is good by itself or with ice cream or whipped cream.  i think this could even be a great brunch pastry.

farm fresh...

our neighbors are going on vacation and they had too many eggs, so they dropped off a dozen fresh eggs from their chickens!  aren't they neat looking?  i can't wait to break one open, i hear farm fresh yolks are far more yellow/orange in color.

play time!

this is a cat stuffed animal that these two both love.  bowie likes to tease wilfred with it and then they play tug a war.  he is very gentle with her, but it is cute to watch the game they have created...

signs of spring...

although the weather is still cold at times, we have had some beautiful sunny warm days.  it is a taste of what spring is going to be like.  but for the last month or so we have had lots of signs of spring!  the days are getting longer (and the time change is just around the corner), the weather is warming up, seeing squirrels again (they disappeared for winter), our rhododendrons are starting to bloom and i am most excited about some bulbs that have been breaking through the dirt for some time now.  they are like little presents and i can't wait to see what they are!  i also bought a bunch of bulbs to plant myself, i know i need to plant them sooner than later, and maybe if we are lucky they will make an appearance this year, but if not then hopefully the following year!  i am also welcoming spring with another use of paint chips.  jarad found a stencil of an egg online and i traced and cut my pastel colors to make an easter egg banner!

hard boiled eggs...

i think i have finally mastered the perfect hard boiled eggs!  i recently started making them and putting them in jarad's lunch.  i read many different recipes online and the first few times i made them although i followed the same instructions every time, i had different results.  sometimes they were over cooked and one time they were under cooked, making them inedible.  so after lots of practice, i have them down!  here is what i do.

~put your eggs in a large pot, i usually do 10 at a time and cover with water until the eggs are just submerged
~put on high heat and bring to a boil
~let boil for 2-3 minutes
~take off heat
~cover for 15-17 minutes
~pour out warm water and cool with cold water
~store in fridge

they turn out with no green ring around the yolk and soft creamy centers.  although i don't enjoy them, they make a great high protein snack or meal on the go!

thank god i'm a country girl...

our dear family friends john and sandy got bowie the cutest birthday gift, a john deere sit and scoot tractor.  bowie had such excitement on her face when she saw it for the first time and loved riding it around the living room...now if only she could put that thing to use and help daddy with the yard!

birthday decorations...

i am having so much fun planning and making decorations for bowie's first birthday party, rainbow themed!  and i am having a blast finding all kinds of new uses for paint chips!  although i do need to make another home depot run for more.  so far i have turned them into book marks (as party favors) and now i am making a "happy birthday" banner out of them.  i don't normally buy magazines, so i texted my neighbor to see if she had any old ones lying around the house.  she had tons and brought them over last night with a bottle of wine (i love my neighbors, she speaks my language)!  so this morning i started to cut out letters and paste them to the paint chips, i just taped the back to some twine and i have the start to a super cute banner!

my next use for the paint is to use them to create a first birthday board.  it will include information like, how many teeth, favorite book, how much do i weigh, how tall, etc.  then i will glue them to a poster board with some pictures of her.

this has me thinking of all kinds of holiday banners you could make out of these paint chips.  pastel colors for spring and easter.  red and pink for valentine's day.  all shades of green for st. pattys day...the list goes on and on!  super fun, easy to make and best of all FREE!!!  (assuming you have magazines, tape, scissors and yarn or twine?!?!)

5 gallons of paint...

i had no idea how hard it would be to chose a white paint for the house.  there are so many shades and some are tinted with shades of reds, blues and yellows.  i also felt the pressure to pick the right shade because we were committing to a 5 gallon bucket!  so after a lot of thought, i went with behr brand "bit of sugar."  their paint comes in 3 different varieties, so we got the middle of the road paint in eggshell.  i started with our office, which i have posted some progression pics of.  although the floor is now completed and the molding is up.  now we just have to get organized and decorate.  here is the floor against the white walls and molding.  please disregard the dust (that is from the entry way that is still in progress, but you get the picture)

next i moved onto the entry hallway.  this was a lot of prep work and a lot of detail, so my mom helped me when she visited almost a month ago.  it turned out great and we even hung some art!  i was torn because i love this artwork so much and have always had it in our bedroom.  it has been hard for me to find the perfect spot to hang some of my art, but i want the entrance to our home to be authentic to our personality and taste.  so i hung up my favorite pieces in the hall and they look great!  i don't have a before picture of the hallway, but the walls were painted a lighter version of the molding.  i think the white really brightens and lightens up the home, which we need for rainy days in washington!!!

next is one of my fav projects so far, our bathroom!  the moldings and casings were painted the same dark tan color, and i went over them with the crisp white.  this project took me 3 of bowie's naps to complete and it was a great use of my time!  i also kept the pocket doors to the closet the original tan color and i love the look of all 3 colors together.

tan trim before

white trim after

my most recent project and the last of my paint is the laundry room!  it was originally a light sea foam color and i wasn't unhappy with the color but the walls needed some touching up and we didn't have any extra paint to do this.  so i took the last of my white paint and painted 3 of the 4 walls (leaving the back wall the original color) and painted the ceiling.  it looks so much fresher and clean.  i might even be excited to do laundry now?!?!?

now we have to finish the entry way to the home with our new tile and we will be good for a while.  i have learned that there is no such thing as a small project in this house and we only get short blocks of time while bowie is napping to work on things.  i recently got a bunch of bulbs and am looking forward to doing some gardening.  i really don't have a green thumb and it may be too late to plant bulbs right now, but i'm gonna give it a try!

nothing better...

this never gets old.  nothing better than taking a little nap on a rainy day.  i'm savoring every cuddle, i don't know how much longer she will do this.
