sweet summer strawberries...

hanging on to every last drop of summer.  my favorite time is afternoons in our back yard; we garden, play in the dirt, eat fruit and get wet...it's awesome!

home made pasta sauce...

i am not a tomato eater, good thing bowie is.  our tomato plants are finally getting more than a few ripe tomatoes at a time, so i picked a small bowl full and wasn't sure what to do with them all.  i decided to make my own pasta sauce.  i roasted them on a sheet pan with olive oil, salt, italian seasoning and a clove of garlic.  when they were done, i used my immersion blender to blend it up with some fresh basil (also from the garden).  it is a small batch, but enough for a 2 person pasta dinner!  love that this all came from our garden!

kombucha 1 week later...

i was shocked at home much yeast had formed in the first 24 hours of starting my first batch of kombucha.  the brand strains are the yeast and i was even more shocked that within a few days a baby scoby had started to form.  now at one week into the fermentation process i have a very healthy and alive baby scoby that has formed over the top layer.  we leave for vacation at the end of the week and i am undecided what i want to do with this batch.  i certainly could leave it until we get home, but will have to make sure the house sitter knows not to worry it is not a body part in there, like some high school science class ;-)

best birthday ever!

what could be better than my sister visiting and you realize your favorite band is playing the last stop of their tour on your birthday (kinda close by), so you get last minute pit tickets and get up close and personal with The Kings of Leon and Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats! Amazing night and bday!!!!! (we were so close, no zoom needed)

arboretum...

fun day at the arboretum hiding and searching for painted rocks.  we wandered through the trees and gardens and found some gems...we rehid them all.  then we had a pre-bday girls wine night at the house, which was a lot of fun!  great day!

summer concert...

yay, auntie jamie is here to visit for the weekend!  today we picked her up from the airport, got lunch, took a nap, picked blackberries, visited with the neighbor goats and ended the day with a concert at the lake and pizza!  perfect day in my book!

kombucha...

as i mentioned in my previous post, i want to get into brewing my own kombucha.  i did lots and lots of researching and reading and got my first batch going!  there are all kinds of "starter kits" available online, but really it is so easy and inexpensive to start on your own.

things you will need:

~1 gallon glass jar (i got it at big lots for $6)
~green or black tea
~cane sugar
~scoby and 1 cup of starter liquid (or white distilled vinegar if starter liquid is unavailable)
~coffee filter and rubber bands

how to:

basically you are making a sweet tea and adding the scoby to it to start the fermentation process.  i boiled the water and added my sugar and tea bags and let them steep.  after ten minutes i removed the tea bags and let the liquid come to room temp.  at this point i added the scoby and covered with my coffee filter (or breathable cloth) and secured with a rubber band.  i have it stored in my laundry room out of direct sunlight and cold.  the fermentation process can take anywhere from 7-30 days depending on how you like your kombucha.  then comes phase 2 of adding my flavor combinations.  this will be the 2nd fermentation and what gives the kombucha the carbonation.  this 2nd phase is not necessary but for me will be the fun part of playing with flavor combinations.

scoby can be found online or if you know of someone who makes their own, i am sure they would be willing to share as it grows with each batch you make.  i have been told that is you do buy online not to purchase a dehydrated one.  if you are familiar with sour dough bread or apple cider vinegar you know that there is the "mother culture."  that is what the scoby is, it stands for "symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast."  now that i have my first batch going, i am learning on how to care for my scoby, which can involve a "scoby hotel."  haha!  i won't bore you with these details, but i will keep you posted on this fun science experiment.

i want to add that it seems like a lot of sugar, but this is what the scoby eats off of, so when the fermentation process is complete to your liking the final product does not have a high sugar content. i was tempted to cut back on the sugar ratio, but everything i read said not to, so that the scoby will have an ideal environment to thrive.

fox hollow farm...

we have had this date on the calendar for over a month now to meet up with some friends at the fox hollow farm in issaquah.  this is a rescue/learning farm where kids can feed animals, pet them, go in the corn kernel pit, jump house, pony rides, atv rides, train ride and play by the creek.

it was a beautiful summer day to enjoy on the farm.  we loved going inside the barn stalls to pet and feed the goats, bunnies, pigs, kittens and chickens.  all the animals are very friendly and gentle.  i am not sure who had a better time, me or bowie.

i can not wait to go back and bring jarad and i know my family would LOVE this place.  the grounds are so beautifully kept and there is so much to do!

repeat...

those of you who know me well, know i can listen to a song on repeat until i am blue in the face.  this one has been on repeat in my house for months now.  i still can't get enough...i do know my husband is tired of it, and most likely bowie and wilfred too (since they hear it all day long)

orcas island...

we just got back from an awesome weekend in orcas island.  we have become good friends with our real estate agent and her family and they invited us up to their cabin.  they own several properties there as well as the marina where whale watching is a big deal, hence the name "orcas island."  getting there requires a bit of traveling.  we had to drive up to anacortes and then catch a ferry to the island.  then it is a about a 15 minute drive to their home.  in total it is about a 5.5 - 6 hour journey to get there.  the ferry is pretty cool and jarad loved that the ferry had tables with puzzles to work on.

we made sure to go during "crab season'" which is from the middle of july until the end of september.  the boys caught over a dozen dungeness crabs and feasted on them all weekend and we even brought some home.  we kayaked, went to the farmers market, went to the highest part of the san juan islands (mt. constituion) and took a boat to sucia island where we played at the beach and hiked! looking forward to making this a yearly tradition with bob and cheryl!

creatively inspired...

i am feeling very creatively inspired these days.  something i haven't felt in a while.  i am excited to try some new DIY projects...

first one is making my own kombucha!!!  my neighbor had a growler of kombucha from a local market.  the flavor was coconut, lime, ginger and it was sooooo good!  the market she got it from is too far away, but it inspired me to see what it would take to start making my own.  kombucha has amazing probiotic properties and is good for you and the right flavor combo can be so yummy!  i started by doing some research on recipes and what i need to get started and watching some youtube videos.  i picked up a 1 gallon glass jar and some organic teas to play with .  i am getting a starter (aka "scoby") from a neighbor after i posted on my local buy nothing group as an ask.  excited to start my first batch hopefully this week!

my 2nd project i want to get into is macrame.  they are hippish wall hangings.  i picked up some beautiful drift wood from orcas island to get mine started and got some thick macrame yarn on amazon.  i have watched some tutorials on how to make the knots, but i will need lots of help to get started on this one!  i can't wait to get my first piece accomplished and find a spot to hang it at home!  here is an example of something i want to make...

this one is hopfully something bowie and i can do together or maybe even jarad wants to get in on this one.  i have picked, washed and started painting some rocks to hide around town.  people paint and hide rocks in town and then rehide or keep them, and post pics on facebook.  i have seen some really beautiful ones and am inspired to play along!

and lastly my girlfriend is giving me a cross stich christmas stocking she started but doesn't want.  hopefully i will be able to follow the instructions and make bowie a hand made stocking!

home grown...

getting ready to leave for orcas island this afternoon.  i picked all of our tomatoes to give to the neighbors.  hopefully there will be lots when we get back!

and the margs were delicious, but i have some frozen pie crust and i see a blackberry pie in our future!

and i took 2 perfect plums from the neighbors when i delivered the tomatoes!  the color on these are so pretty and they are delicous!

things i learned yesterday...

1 - go to costco in the afternoon, the samples are way better!  and then you may not even have to feed your kid dinner!

2 - sprinklers and the hose count as a bath in summer!
3 -  summer is magical in washington!  i find myself already getting sad at the thought of it ending.  i can feel the nights and mornings getting cooler.  the days are getting shorter and talk about school and halloween costumes and fall decor in the stores!!!!  we spend a good chunk of time outside everyday and we are soaking in every last drop of summer.  i know it's not gone yet, but i can feel it slipping away.  i mentioned it before, but it is worth saying again, my most favorite memories this summer have been the time spent in our yard.
4 - let them get dirty!  playing in the dirt and with rocks is a sensory play experience.

as we waited for jarad to get home, i enjoyed watering my plants and bowie kept herself busy playing with the dirt and rocks.  she would look over and check in with me, and she would also do the same with wilfred.  i realized that when they say how quickly they grow up, that is an understatement.  i love the little person she is growing into and hope that today she learned some lessons as well.  important things like your mom and dog will always be your best friends and you will always be daddy's girl waiting to greet him when he gets home.  and it's okay to get your hands dirty (or in this case, get everything dirty).  and there is beauty in nature and it heals the soul.

organization obsession!

i've posted before about my obsession to stay organized and these are the cheapest and easiest way to start!  these sterilite brand shoe box sized containers are perfect!  they are easily available (target, big lots, dollar store, etc.) and are a buck!  i use them for everything!!!  from organizing toys, storing baby manuals, prescriptions, art supplies, make up...the possibilities are endless!

case of the mondays...

sometimes your week starts out with a bad case of the monday blues, only to be cured by your girlfriend texting you "wanna come over for an afternoon playdate?"  which is mom code for wanna come over drink some wine and let the babies play and entertain one another?

had a great time and came home to my husband arriving home moments after us and our neighbors and their grand kids coming up the driveway on their john deere hot wheels.  bowie's eyes lite up and she was excited to go for a ride, while we picked blackberries.  we made black berry margaritas and enjoyed them by the lake with our amazing neighbors.  again, i am reminded that it is the simple things.  it warms my heart that bowie gets to run around in her diaper, get dirty and play with the neighbor kids (grand kids that is).  we are so lucky to have such wonderful neighbors that we call friends and treat us like family.

my "other" baby...

love this dog so much!  he is my first baby...fur baby that is.  and sometimes he likes to be the only child again and get all of my attention.

fun little saturday...

jarad left early this morning to head to whistler to ride his bike!  so i had to find some fun stuff for us girlies to do today to keep busy.  we started the morning off with a trip to the farmers market (first time this summer) and then headed over to lake wilderness arboretum.  we had a great time walking through he paths and looking at the beautiful trees and flowers and bowie really enjoyed playing with the rocks.  and speaking of rocks, there is a fun game that we have going on in the community.  people paint rocks and hide them.  the arboretum is a popular place to find them and we found our first rock!  i am feeling inspired to paint and hide some of our own.  then people post the ones they find on facebook and instagram!
