sunday funday...

yesterday jarad worked like a dog in the yard and burned our last burn pile (a huge one) and the neighbor even helped do some work on his tractor.  then we had company over for dinner, so sunday was a day for us all to relax and be together outside before the week starts.

we hid some rocks we painted and checked out a new rock hunting trail.  we ended up at our favorite spot...yep you guessed it, the arboretum!  we all had a good time, including wilfred who had so much fun he needed a bath when we got home!

i snapped this pic when we were walking a trail at henry's ridge.  i take so many pics, but bowie is so squirmy that they come out blurry and i rarely get a frame worthy one.  but this one i am proud of, i don't think it could get any sweeter.

remember how i traded a scoby for eggs earlier in the week, well i used some today in my meatballs and look at these yolks!  in case you thought there wasn't a difference between store bought and farm fresh eggs.  wow!

fun with food...

i turn around for 1 minute and this happens...guess it is bath time!

friday fun...

i love fridays because jarad comes home early from work.  it was a nice day, so we went rock hunting, to the gym and then went out for chinese food.  it was a nice evening with my little family.

another beautiful fall day spent rock hunting in the arboretum yesterday.  we found 2 cool rocks today and we hid a bunch by shadow lake.

a lady posted on the community page that she was looking for a scoby to start brewing her own kombucha.  i responded and traded her one of my healthy scobys for a dozen of her eggs!  she says that most of the time her chickens lay double yolks!  sounds like a good deal to me!

if you say "wilfred" she says "doggy" but she can say "beardsly" (his middle name)

fun find...

the best part about the rock hunting game is when you find one when you are least expecting it and not looking for them.  that happened this morning as we were leaving toddler time at the community center.  it feels like a hug from a friend you haven't met yet!

it is only tuesday and we have already rocked the arboretum looking for rocks twice this week!  i just bought some sealer so i can start painting again!

rock finds...

today i took bowie to the library to read some new books and then a walk through the arboretum.  we found the "harry potter" rock hidden on a shelf in the library, and the others are from our walk.  bowie enjoyed pulling out all the books from the shelf but we are going to give story time a try on friday.

i had a dear college friend come for a visit over the weekend and it was her first time in washington.  we showed her the lakes, rocked the arboretum, went to snoqualamie falls, did a tour of blue origin and finished with a fun trip into seattle and pike place!

19 months!!!

this little stinker is 19 months old!  time sure does fly by!  this month has been a challenging one.  we have been dealing with some sleep regression (or waking up multiple times during the night and dropping our binky for attention), and learning to share, working on giving up the bottle, introducing potty training and her saying "no."

i sure hope the "terrible 2's" have not blessed us early.  but i realize this is hard time developmentally.  she is wanting to be more independent and express herself.  i also know we are taking away comfort items and working on some big concepts that take time and patience.

i try to get her out of the house often, and outdoors when it is nice out!  she loves toddler time and we have play dates weekly.  we go on nature walks at the arboretum and do a lot of arts and crafts and sensory activities.  recently she has taken a liking to minnie mouse and her vocabulary grows larger and larger every day!

bowie milestones...

~size 5 diaper (not for long, unfortunately i forgot to adjust our amazon order, but next month will be size 6!) size 2 T pant, 4 T shirt, 3 T pajama, size 5 shoe
~too many teeth to count, and she won't let me look
~calls wilfred "beardsly" (his middle name)
~picky eater, but loves "nuni's" (egg noodles with cottage cheese and browned butter)
~takes 1 nap a day unless really tired
~hair is light golden brown and long!  we are working on keeping a clip or band in her hair to keep the bangs off of her face.  eyes are dark hazel green
~loves her blanky, binky and "ba-ba" all at the same time
~loves to play with little people, pretend food, books, doll and play-doh
~loves to feed wilfred treats
~top of growth chart for height and weight
~loves being outside
~doesn't like sitting in car seat as much or being in the car for long periods of time (i can't blame her)
~loves animals
~lots of pretend play
~interested in babies and loves watching big kids
~likes to do a somersault with help of course
~loves chocolate

more rock hunting...

i love this rock hunting game, it is a bit addictive.  but it promotes generosity, giving and creativity.  when we went to the arboretum to look for rocks we saw lots of families there doing the same thing!  it forces you to stop and look around at nature, picking up small details and to be aware of the beauty around you.  and it is exciting when you do find a rock!  but the other part is you have to participate in posting your finds on the facebook page.  we went as a family after the gym one evening and we found a rock obviously done by a youngster, and i posted online and the mom responded how her daughter was so happy we found it and actually posted it online!

i need to get better supplies so i can continue to paint rocks and hide them, but until then we will continue to rock the arboretum a couple of times a week for some hunting.  here are our recent finds and keeps.  some of these rocks are so pretty we have been keeping them and putting them in our potted plants.  other times we rehid them to keep the game going.  don't worry, we are not breaking any rules, you can chose to keep or rehide them!

macrame monday...

learning a new hobby for winter and i picked macrame.  i have been watching youtube videos on how to make the knots and even found a "beginner" design.  i started the design, but my knots are sloppy and big so i started to run out of cord, so i started to make my own design.  it's not done yet, but this is my first practice piece.  i love the driftwood, picked this up in orcas island.  i can tell this is harder than it looks, so i better get practicing!

costco PSA...

family trip to costco today, we got our usuals, but we scored a real winner today.  they were giving samples of their chicken pot pie and it was delicious!  they make it with white meat rotisserie chicken and lots of veggies and the crust was amazing.  the thing weighed 5.5 pounds and was $18, and it was good enough to serve for company!  truth be told, chicken pot pie is not my favorite.  it was never something my mom made and the few times i ever had it was frozen.  so i have never had a good one.  so if you find yourself at costco and see these, pick one up for dinner!  i will be getting this again for sure, although they did say it was a seasonal item.

one year ago...

this weekend last year we moved into our house!  it was an exciting and scary time all in one, but over the last year we have worked hard to make this house a home.  from the moment we pulled into the driveway to check it out with our real estate agent, i think we both knew we finally found the ONE!  we had looked long and hard for this kind of house and our search started years prior when we were looking in california.  this house is everything i never knew i wanted and MORE!  its bones are of a farm house, so by definition it is not perfect, but it is warm, cozy and has lots of character.  when i look back at the last year, we have been busy with house projects, and i have learned there is no such thing as a "little" or "inexpensive" project in this house.  and it always takes longer than expected, but the results are always so worth it!  i love the transformation that occurs with every project to make this house represent more of our style and personality.  here are some of the major work we did over the last year...

~ripped out carpet in office and installed wood floors
~painted office from sage green to a crisp white
~painted the hallway entrance from tan to white
~painted the laundry from a light sea foam green to white
~re-tiled the entry way floor
~stripped the wallpaper and painted the 4th bedroom from lime green to white
~lots of landscaping and maintaining the front yard.  getting rid of burn piles and blackberries
~repaired some rotten siding on the shop
~painted all the window casings in the master bathroom white
~cleaned out and started furnishing the apartment
~cleaned out the garage and shops

future projects we have in mind...

~inside and exterior painting
~remove one of the staircases
~remove the wall on our kitchen island
~possibly bring down the fireplace and wall to make a large great room for an open concept feel
~kitchen remodel (paint or new cabinets and extend island)
~slowly get rid of all carpet and replace with hard wood flooring
~new light fixture in dining room, i want an edison bulb chandelier
~install ceiling fans in the bedrooms
~complete apartment so we can air bnb it

18 month check up...

this morning we had bowie's 18 month check up!  she did very well, but this was the first time she ever cried, from them taking her temp under the arm to listening to her heart, she did not like the nurse or being on the table.  then of course she had 3 shots which really made her mad. i tried to make up for it by taking her to toddler time after.

the doctor said she has grown "exponentially" since her 1 year check up.  she is 35 1/2 inches tall!  she is very very tall for her age (99 percentile) and she weighed in at 31 pounds, which is 98 percentile.  it is safe to say our little girl is not so little, but she is perfectly healthy.

my mommy goals after this appointment are to start weaning her off of the bottle, binky and schedule her first dentist appointment soon.

fall decor...

aren't these insanely beautiful?  this is what my talented mom made!  they are fairy tale pumpkins with succulents from her garden!  they came out so gorgeous, and i am kinda obsessed!  i feel like these would make an amazing centerpiece for thanksgiving dinner and are beautiful enough for a fall wedding!  and they would also be beautiful with white pumpkins!  OMG! so pretty!

setting holiday expectations...

each year as a parent makes you a little more assertive.  this year i am tying to be proactive with the holiday gift giving and giving some ideas.  don't get me wrong, i appreciate all the gifts, but i'm trying a new approach this year so that we can get things we actually need or could use.  this was my email to the family today...

Hi family,

Starting to think about the holidays, please don't buy for Jarad and I but if you want to get something for Bowie, I put together some ideas on Amazon. Some of her favorite toys these days are Fisher-Price Little People, pretend food, puzzles, books and arts and crafts. She does really well in the Cat and Jack clothing line from Target. She's currently in a size 2T pant, a 3T pajama and a 4T shirt. Please buy big (or include gift receipt) and remember we can wear long sleeves year round here ;-) and that summer doesn't really begin until mid July.

If you prefer an experience type gift, please consider adding to her toddler time punch card which is $3 a visit, or I will be enrolling her in The Little Gym this winter which is $19 a visit. I'm also planning on swim lessons as well.

But please know that gifts are never expected!!! Our most favorite gift is the time spent with family! Our goal is to make holidays less about gift-giving and more about family, traditions, experiences, making memories and giving to those less fortunate.

And if anyone asks you about gift ideas, please feel free to share this email.

can you relate?

major case of the mondays.  the weekends are too quick and too much to do too little time.  i saw a quote that rang true for me, can you relate?  it was to the effect of...

"you are a good mother, a good wife, a good friend, a good sister, a good daughter, etc.  but not at the same time."

feeling spread thin.  time to take a step back and re-evaluate priorities and not be so hard on myself.

fall family photos...

we got fall family photos done today.  bowie was not into it and if you could only see the behind the scenes prior to getting the photos taken.  mama is stressing because she needs to get ready but the dog paid the neighbors a visit and came back covered in shit (literally) and needs a bath ASAP, bowie walks into the corner of a wall and bruises her face/check and i am completely undecided about what we should all wear.  i sure hope we get a few winners, but while i wait for the professional ones to come in, here are a few that i took.
