this fun and yummy science project has been going around my office and i wanted to share. i was given a ziplock bag with a "starter" in it, and ten days later and a lot of "mushing" i baked a delicious sweet bread and gave the rest of the new starters away...here is how it works.
~do not use any type of metal spoon or mixing bowl
~do not refrigerate
~it is normal to rise, bubble and ferment and burp as needed
day 1...do nothing
day 2...mush the bag
day 3...mush the bag
day 4...mush the bag
day 5...add to the bag: 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of milk & mush the bag
day 6...mush the bag
day 7...mush the bag
day 8...mush the bag
day 9...mush the bag
day 10...follow these instructions:
~pour the entire contents of bag into a non-metal bowl
~add 1.5 cup flour, 1.5 cup sugar and 1.5 cup milk and mix
~measure 1 cup of batter into each of (4) 1 gallon ziplock bags
~give away 3 bags along with the recipe to friends and keep 1 bag for yourself
~preheat oven to 325 degrees
~to the remaining batter add:
3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2 t cinnaomon
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 t vanilla
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
2 cup flour
1 box vanilla instant puddling
1/2 t salt
how to:
grease 2 loaf pans or muffin tins and in a bowl mix 1/2 cup sugar and 1 t cinnamon to dust the pans with. pour batter into pans and sprinkle any remaining sugar on top. bake for one hour and allow to cool
if you keep a starter for yourself you will be baking every 10 days. you can add dried fruit or nuts as well.
